Many newer vehicles rely on a forward-facing camera mounted behind the windshield to power driver assistance features such as lane departure warning. When that camera is moved, even slightly, those safety features can stop working the way they should. AMB Auto Glass & Window Tint offers lane departure camera calibration for San Diego drivers, including calibration after windshield replacement, so your vehicle leaves our shop ready for the road. If you only have a small chip or crack, our windshield repair service may let you keep your original glass.

    What Is ADAS Camera Calibration?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: features like lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and forward collision warning. Most of these systems use a camera mounted near the rearview mirror that watches lane markings and the road ahead. Calibration is the process of aiming that camera so it sees the road exactly the way your vehicle was designed to. When the camera is even a fraction of a degree off, the system can misread where the lane is or how far away the car in front of you is. Our skilled technicians calibrate the camera so you can enjoy the full benefit of these safety features.

    Calibration After Windshield Replacement

On most camera-equipped vehicles, the camera bracket is attached directly to the windshield glass. When the windshield is replaced, the camera has to be removed and re-installed on the new glass, and its viewing angle can shift in the process. That is why, when your windshield comes with cameras, we re-install and re-calibrate them as part of the job to restore your vehicle to its proper working condition. You get a clear new windshield and driver assistance features you can rely on.

After Wheel Alignment or Suspension Work

Your forward camera judges what is straight ahead based on how the vehicle sits and tracks on the road. A wheel alignment, suspension repair, or a change in ride height, such as lifting or lowering a vehicle, can change that reference point. If your lane assist keeps nudging you when you are driving straight, or lane departure alerts sound when you are centered in your lane, the camera may need to be calibrated. Give us a call and we will help you find out.

After a Collision or a Warning Light

Even a minor collision, a cracked windshield near the camera, or work around the rearview mirror can knock an ADAS camera out of position. Watch for dashboard messages saying a driver assistance feature is unavailable, features that switch themselves off, or alerts that seem to come too early or too late. If you notice any of these signs, call AMB at (619) 514-3537 and our team will help you get your safety system working properly again.

    ADAS Camera Calibration FAQs

Do I need camera calibration after a windshield replacement?

If your vehicle has a camera mounted to the windshield, the camera has to be removed and re-installed during the replacement, so it should be calibrated to make sure it is aimed correctly. When we replace a windshield that comes with cameras, we re-install and re-calibrate them. Learn more about our windshield replacement in San Diego.

How do I know if my ADAS camera is out of calibration?

Common signs include a dashboard message saying lane assist or another driver assistance feature is unavailable, lane departure warnings that go off when you are centered in your lane, lane keeping assist that steers you off-center, or collision alerts that seem to come too early or too late.

Can I skip calibration if there is no warning light?

We do not recommend it. A camera can be slightly misaligned without triggering a warning, and the system may still be working from the wrong reference point. If your windshield, the camera mount or your wheel alignment has changed, it is best to have the camera checked.

Which vehicles need ADAS camera calibration?

Any vehicle with a forward-facing camera behind the windshield, which is common on vehicles with lane departure warning or lane keeping assist. Not sure what your car has? Call us at (619) 514-3537 with your vehicle’s year, make and model and we will help.

Does insurance cover ADAS camera calibration?

AMB works with insurance companies on auto glass claims. Coverage for calibration depends on your policy, so call us and we can help you check what your insurer covers.
